Admission Policy

Admission assessment is required on entry to ascertain the ability of students to access the curriculum. This is designed to ascertain the level of need each student has and to match it to the school’s ability to adequately provide for those needs. As admissions tests are required to be able to enroll in any school, at IIS, it is no different.

Our admission policy ensures that each student is matched to the right level of education he deserves!

As part of the admission process, students entering KG1, KG2 and Grade 1 will be invited to meet with the Head of Primary/Early Years, and where possible, meet teachers in a small group situation. Parents are invited to attend with their child as well. For Grade 2 and Grade 3, entrance exam is based on verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills assessments and a reading, writing, and computation task, as part of the admission process. In Grades 4-8, students complete an online verbal and non-verbal reasoning and quantitative skills assessment. Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds may be required to carry out a supplementary assessment in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Students with additional learning needs may be required to undertake a specific assessment as determined by the Head of Inclusion.

For KG1 students, admission is based on the student’s language, personal, social, and emotional development which is determined from current nursery reports and photographs. For KG2 and Grade 1 students, confidential reports, photographs, and current samples of work form the basis of the admission and assessment process. For Grade 2 and Grade 3 students, a confidential report and samples of work are obtained. Admission into Grade 4 and above requires the sitting and invigilating of an online assessment in an educational establishment in the country of residence. This usually takes place at the student’s current school. Samples of the student’s English, Mathematics and Science within the current term are also obtained.

The student’s Grade of entry is based on the current Student Entrance Age criteria in accordance with the current policy as outlined by the Ministry of Education in the United Arab Emirates.

Students may be asked to return for a re-assessment if they are upset at the initial assessment, if they are sick at the initial assessment, or if there is an unexplained mismatch in the student’s school reports and assessment results. In all cases, the reasons for a re-assessment will be recorded on the Admissions Data Sheet, approved, and signed by the Admissions Manager/ Principal as part of the re-assessment and admission process.

We recognize that a candidate’s performance at the assessment stage may be affected by some conditions such as sickness or a lengthy absence from schooling, family circumstances such as a recent bereavement, differences in educational systems, or specific language or learning needs. Thus, for the purposes of making a fair and informed decision, we request the right to obtain further information such as a medical certificate or educational psychologist’s report and/ or associated correspondence from the student’s current school (including samples of work).

Admission applicants should disclose any particular known or suspected circumstances relating to their child’s health, allergies, disabilities, behavior issues, or learning difficulties. If information has been deliberately withheld or communicated incorrectly during the application process, the Italian International School has the right to withdraw any offer that has been made, leading to the termination of the admission process.
